What is an Import Export Code (IEC)?

The Import Export Code (IEC) is a 10-digit identification number issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India. An IEC is mandatory for any entity — individual, proprietor, partnership, LLP, company, or trust — wishing to import or export goods or services from India. It is issued to the PAN of the business entity and is a lifetime registration with no annual renewal. The IEC must be linked to customs (ICEGATE) for shipment clearance and is required for all foreign remittance transactions related to trade. Exporters and importers also need an IEC to claim benefits under DGFT schemes like MEIS, SEIS, RoDTEP, and Advance Authorisation.

DGFT Export Benefit Schemes Enabled by IEC

RoDTEP — Remission of Duties:

Remission of Duties and Taxes on Exported Products scheme provides exporters a credit for embedded taxes (central, state, local) that are not refunded under GST. Credits are issued as duty scrips transferable to other importers.

Advance Authorisation:

Allows duty-free import of inputs (raw materials, components) required for manufacturing export products. Inputs must be consumed in the production and the finished goods exported within 18 months.

EPCG — Export Promotion Capital Goods:

Permits import of capital goods for pre-production, production, and post-production at zero/reduced customs duty, subject to export obligation (6x the duty saved over 6 years).

DFIA — Duty-Free Import Authorisation:

Allows duty-free import of inputs after export is made. Unlike Advance Authorisation, DFIA is transferable and can be used for subsequent imports after export obligation is fulfilled.

RoSCTL — Textile & Apparel:

Rebate of State and Central Taxes and Levies on export of apparel and made-ups. Credits are issued as transferable scrips — one of the most valuable export incentives for the textile sector.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is IEC registration mandatory for all importers and exporters?+
Yes. Any entity importing goods into India or exporting goods from India must have a valid IEC — except for personal imports/exports not for commercial purposes and certain government departments. Service exporters may be exempt from IEC if they receive foreign remittance through banking channels.
What is the validity of an IEC?+
An IEC is issued for lifetime — there is no annual renewal. However, annual IEC modification/update on the DGFT portal is required each year (even if no changes) to keep it active. We assist with annual IEC update filings.
Can an individual (not a business entity) get an IEC?+
Yes. Individuals can obtain an IEC in their own name using their personal PAN. This is common for individual importers, freelance exporters, and home-based exporters.
What DGFT export promotion schemes require IEC?+
IEC is a prerequisite for all DGFT schemes including: RoDTEP (Remission of Duties and Taxes on Exported Products), Advance Authorisation, EPCG (Export Promotion Capital Goods), MEIS/SEIS benefits, and SEZ unit filings.
What documents are required for IEC registration?+
PAN card of the entity, Aadhaar/passport/voter ID for identity proof, proof of establishment (Certificate of Incorporation/Partnership Deed/MSME certificate), current bank account details in the entity's name, cancelled cheque or bank certificate, and digital signature certificate (DSC) for portal submission.
